Congratulations to our Benton Seniors team of 8 who won this year’s Club Company Inter-Club final held at Chartham Park. The final, contested by Mapledurham, Lichfield, Tytherington and Benton Hall, was a best 3 from 4 greensomes stableford scores. Benton’s total of 118pts was too good for the competition and we won by 3pts from The Tytherington. Well done to all who took part!
Get Into Golf News
Club Professional Lee Cocker recently took a group of our ‘Get into Golf’ class over to The Essex Golf & Country Club so they could test their skills on the 9 hole Garden Course.
The course proved more of a challenge from what they are used to, however the Texas scramble format along with the assistance of Anne Ross & Sue Ward, helped them along the way. The sun shone, the course was in pristine condition and fun was had by all.
Benton Juniors win the Faldo Wedge
Congratulations to our junior team who achieved an incredible victory in the Essex Faldo Wedge on the 30th May. 120 junior golfers representing 40 teams from across the county teed off with the aim to win the sand wedge that Sir Nick Faldo donated to the Golf Foundation in 1994.
Teeing off in the morning wave, Junior Club Captain, Dominic Hoskin led Cameron Myles and Ben Kersey in scoring a combined 110 Stableford points to beat Epping by 3 points. Dominic also finished 3rd in the individual Stableford competition, which resulted in his handicap being cut to 7, and his score of 74 (+4) proved to be the lowest overall gross score of the day.
It wasn’t all plain sailing though as they struggled to get going as a team during the early stages, finding themselves a combined 5 over handicap after 7 holes. However, the team showed great character to battle back and after 16 holes they were 4 under as a team – quite a turnaround! Their final total of 2 under would end up as the only under handicap team score of the competition, with many of the other sides struggling in the conditions. The boys then had to endure an agonising 4 hours of leaderboard watching whilst the teams that teed off in the afternoon came in.
Benton Hall will now go on to represent Essex in the English Junior Champion Club in August. Good luck boys!
