Summer is finally here, and there’s never been a better time to get out onto the course and enjoy the sunshine!
It’s been a busy few weeks at the club, as June got underway with some fantastic celebrations for The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Our Jubilee family picnic and afternoon tea were well attended, and a great time was had by all members and staff.
New fountains have been fitted in the lake which can be viewed from the restaurant terrace. These have made the lake sparkle, and we’re sure you agree that they add to the ambience of the area.
We must say a quick congratulations to our Spring Trophy winner, Barry Harding!

Great News! Due to members' feedback regarding the difficulties securing tee times on weekend mornings, and to protect your membership, we will soon be introducing a joining fee for 7-day golfers and a waiting list in the near future.
From 1st July we will be offering a new golf membership which will allow tee time bookings anytime Monday to Friday and after 2pm at weekends during the summer months and after midday during the winter months.
The last month proved to be good for growth around the course. We had a good balance of rainfall and some good day and nighttime temperatures. Greens have continued to perform well and we are now seeing a reduction of Poa seed heads. The greens, tees and approaches have received a fertiliser application and are responding well following this.
We installed an additional two water displacement fountains for the main lake. These will help to aerate the lake to prevent the unsightly alga forming and improve the water quality for the irrigation system on the golf course (not to mention the fish)!
Following the recent rainfall, the greens have pitch marks appearing again. Please all be vigilant on repairing all pitch marks to maintain great putting surfaces. I would like to formally introduce Dylan and Liam, our new greenkeepers. This now completes the team, so please say hello and make them feel welcome. Let’s hope the summer months produce some great golfing weather conditions for you to continue to enjoy the course.
With the golfing calendar in full swing, the course is in excellent condition. The greens are the best I have ever seen them, so well done to Adrian and his team.
The Tuesday competitions have been well supported with varied winners; congratulations to Paul Drake who got a hole in one on the 6th hole. The results to date for the home and away matches are won 7, drawn 1 and lost 2. Again, well done to Dave Moseley, who picks the teams, and to the players who played in them.
We have played two matches with one more to play in the Triangular, and at present we are 26 points behind joint leaders Three Rivers and The Essex. Whilst this is a challenge, it's not impossible to catch up so fingers crossed for the last round.
Alan Hickford's John Day team had a great win and are looking forward to the next round. Andy Bedford's Over 55s put up a great performance, but unfortunately were beaten in the end so will now be looking forward to next year. With the Seniors’ championship at the end of June I look forward to announcing the winner in July's update.
As we move into summer, the Ladies’ section has certainly been busy. As well as our weekly competitions on a Thursday and Saturday/Sunday, our county teams have had a very hectic time, playing matches in the Bronze Shield, Silver Trophy and Harris Bowl competitions. We have had mixed fortunes in all three competitions (initially played as a league, with three or four matches to be contested), but we have a fantastic team spirit across all groups and really do our best to support each other and give all the encouragement we can.
We are competing on another front in the ‘Annodata’, which is a national knockout competition. We played our first-round match at Benton Hall against a very strong Chelmsford side, with a convincing 4-1 win. We certainly celebrated that result.
We had our Spring meeting in early May, which consisted of an 18-hole qualifying competition in the morning, and a fun 9-hole competition in the afternoon. The weather wasn’t kind to us initially, with heavy rain in the early part of the day. For some reason the ladies seemed to blame me for the conditions but the sun did eventually come out and we had a lovely day, rounded off with a meal and prize giving.
There was a mixed section ‘Battle of the Sexes’ competition in May. You may have seen the picture on the Benton Hall website of the victorious ladies’ team... well done ladies – nothing more than we expected.
I am sure you must agree what a fantastic condition the course is in. It looks absolutely wonderful and is playing very well at the moment. A big ‘thank you’ to Adrian and his team.

We have a few new faces amongst the team this month. We have Graham joining us in the Wellness Team, as well as Greg who joins us within the management team and will be covering some duty manager shifts, plus the bar and restaurant when Frankie goes on maternity leave. Finally, we welcome Emma and Emily to the Crèche Team.
Chip the Club Cub
I hope you have all had the chance to meet Chip our new Club Mascot! Chip has met lots of our younger members and is becoming a firm favourite - it is wonderful to see their happy faces. Stop and say hello if you see him out and about at the club!
